Did this too for a couple years, hated doing it in the winter so I decided to get a whole house filter (like this: http://filter-water-softening-systems.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/0...) and removed the filter from the housing and tossed in half a dozen chlorine tablets. Works much better, no over powering smell of bleach, no digging out well in winter and it lasts for 6+months. Best of all it cost like 30bux.
