IIRC, you were talking a loft that was 16' deep, or wide. If this is correct, you would be cutting the width of a 40' wide building to down to only 32' of full height building. This limits the door opening, and usable tall floor space. Also means it's harder to get materials drug back that much farther. Additional it will take more material for floor joist and support with the longer span.
If you do go with a door opening of 16', you will then have about the same distance where the loft would be. If the loft floor and joists are 8-12", you would have about 7 1/2' of height both above and below the loft. Any less would be getting pretty short.
I would also think about some of the the new tech stuff, Internet connections, cameras, computers. Depending on usage, location, distance to house, refrigerator, stove, microwave, hot water, shower, A/C and such in a office or corner partition under the loft might be highly desired. A lot of what might seem to be a real luxury today, is a true need down the road.
Our shop sits next to our barn/cattle working faculities, and these luxuries become very handy. TV with Roku, and DVD player keeps grandkids entertained while we work cows (such as later today). Lets the shop become a family activity center. We also use ours for classes. Like so many things, wish we had done it long before. Kids and now grand kids have swings, floor games painted on the floor, ride trikes and bikes in the winter, roller skate in the winter. Does force you to keep it almost clean and organized!!
Costs do add up, but it can all be done over time, in stages, IF you are able to plan for it. Good Luck.
