Murfreesboro, Tennessee | Adjuster is supposed to be around here next week. Based on what has happened to others in the area, it is likely to be considered a total loss. I have one neighbor that is chopping it as silage, and another that is going to shred the crop and replant milo (if it rains).
While I need all the income I can get, I am not sure how I feel about chopping or baling this crop. I think I would rather just disk it or shred the crop and at least have the fodder on the ground to help build OM. As short as this crop is, it will not yield very much silage or hay, and I would think shredding it would be of greater benefit on a long term basis.
We may use this extra time in ripping some ground, getting ready for a big wheat crop, and pushing out fence rows (things we dont have time for usually).
This is the first time in nearly 20 years of farming that I will not harvest a corn crop. What are some opinions out there as to what is the best approach? Thanks.
