The fast way to check is CAREFULLY, when the machine is running and not turning on tap the rotating clutch plate with a screwdriver handle. If it pops in you probably have the problem.
The clutch engages cold because the resistance in the electromagnet is less and the pull stronger. When it is warm resistance increases and magnetism drops.
