Subject: first semi- cummins ISM advice

SC Kansas
Looking to buy my first semi. I'm only a few years in on taking on more of the farm and need to get this one purchase right. 05 IH Day Cab with the 11 litre ISM cummins. Rated at about 385 hp. 10 speed, 165" wheelbase. 301,000 miles. I've heard rumors about costly replacement of turbo at about this mileage. I've also heard they tend to run hot or hotter than most. It's coming in off lease and will have full maintenance records. They'll have oil analysis reports but not sure what margins to look for on the report. Should I pay for an additional compression check? I need at least 2 or 3 good solid years out of this truck before putting significant money back into it. Asking $35,000. Any thoughts or advice on getting this truck bought right would be appreciated.

Sounds a little high to me. The oil report should advise you of condition. How many miles a year will you use it ?

I see it running about 60,000 miles a year depending on how things go. Can you guys be a little more specific on why those engines "suck"?

I have never owned one, their reputation for dependability is less than the N-14 Cummins series. I am a big fan of N-14 Cummins, however. The 11 litre series is not as tried and true as the bigger, brawnier N-14, never heard drivers brag on them. Just seems like a high $$ price, but I have not seen the truck.

I have 3 ism's and like them from the weight standpoint. they're about 800 lighter than a n14 but I would stay away from a mid '07 to a 2010 with all the newer air pollution stuff. they have alot of trouble period. I'd rather go to an '11 w/ def than a '07-10. ours range from 375 hp to 425 and have had no major problems with them. They have 300000 to 600000 miles on them and tho no engine is trouble free I agree some are worse than others and depending on your use if weight din't an issue look at a n 14. Also "here" anything shorter than 186 in wheel base and you cannot bridge 80,000 using a 41' hopper. I don't know your laws so check with state. we average 25000 empty with 41' hoppers and can haul right at 980 bu of corn where our older cat was about 27500 empty so the truck and engine can make a big difference. there are alot on truckpaper.com to compare and your best to take your time and do your homework to find what works best for you.

The L10 was a good engine, at a reasonable rating, and used responsibly. In much the same way as the C12, the inflated ratings and expectations, have done the most damage.

N-14's are the best for sure, but if you want a newer truck the ISM's are lighter and much cheaper to work on than the ISX's. We work our trucks fairly decent chopping silage and have 2 ISM's with no issues so far.

SEON
I drive a 1998 M11, which is the 10.7 L pre-decessor to the ISM. She's over a million miles now and I drive it because nobody else will. At 370/400 hp, it is pretty gutless and most drivers will tell you anything less than 14L is a piece of crap......because they don`t pay the bills. A couple of months ago I moved a JD230 excavator from Baltimore, MD to Toronto, ON grossed out ~95,000 lbs and she never missed a beat. The only thing I don't like is the oil leaks.

We bought this truck used and promptly blew a head gasket. Then another head gasket ~10,000 miles later (this time it took out the cylinder head). Then I got in it and it lasted ~70,000 miles before it blew the third one. Finally we took it to an old mechanic instead of the KW stealership. He said the blown gaskets were caused from a sunken cylinder liner and the KW shop should have looked for the cause of the problem instead of fixing the symptom. He must have been right because that was approx 150,000 miles ago.

It needs alot of rear gear (mine is a 4.33) to make up for the lack of hp. And because of the 4.33, she is a screamer. I'm not to sure about a 10 speed trans though...mine is a 13. You may find you need more gears. Like someone else said above, most problems are caused from people expecting too much (or abusing) from a 10.7 L engine. With the money saved in fuel mileage, we could afford to rebuild it every year if we had to.

Now, if you want to talk about a POS, let's talk about one of our other engines. A 2008 14 L 485 hp Cummins ISX with the DPF. 2 Turbos, 3 doser valves, EGR valves, EGR coolers, countless computer reflashes, disappearing coolant and crappy fuel mileage. It's a 14L though.
