Subject: John Deere 425 Lawn Tractor engine replacement

The cam stripped on my JD 425 (Kawasaki engine FD620D) and I am interested in replacing the engine with a replacement engine from the internet. There are many companies advertising a replacement engne (Kawasaki FD620 D ) however in fine print there is a disclaimer stating this is not a John Deere part nor a direct replacement for this lawn tractor. Has anyone replaced their Kawasaki FD620D engine with one of these internet kawasaki FD620 D engines and if so can you give me a heads up on what it takes i.e. do you need to use many parts from your existing engine, radiator, muffler, wiring harness, flywheel, starter, fan blade, motor mounts, is it a relatively painless exchange and maybe where you purchased your replacement engine?

Thanks
Robb Swearingen

I bought a new Kawasaki motor for our JD gator from Small Engine Warehouse in Indiana. It was $330 on my doorstep vs. $1300 from Deere. Bolted right in. They were very helpful on the phone and could probably answer all your questions.

Thanks John,
I'm looking at Small Engine Warehouse but they tell me the Kawasaki FD620D engine is "almost" a direct replacement but can't tell me what replaces and don't. They tell me to take my old engine and start replacing parts on the new engine until I get the new installed and working. Not totally assuring when your spending $2000.00 for the engine.

Not your model but...

We just put a kawasaki 23 hp engine in our JD 737. It was a complete engine, hook up fuel lines and plug in wires. It took guy that it handy with small engines, 2hrs to do the entire swap. The engine came from smallenginewarehouse.com. I ordered it on Monday am and showed up Tuesday am. Painless process except for the hole in the block and the bill. This website was the same place our local deere gets their replacement engines. Good luck.

Is the rest of the engine worn out? The replacement cam gear is metal, where your early model 425 gear is plastic/fiber material, if I remember correctly.

When I replaced the B&S v-twin in my Woods mower, I got the engine from Small Engine Warehouse. It had that same disclaimer about not being a direct replacement. When the engine arrived, it had a printed instruction sheet about switching the front sheet metal and a coupler from the old engine to the new generic engine. so I have a new engine with 15 year old sheet metal.

Some of the time they have to say that do to emissions regulations. Some of the models also have the choke and throttle separate and some do not, not a big deal to switch one for the other. Get it up on a pile of pallets or something like that to save a lot of bending over too,

Many Thanks to all replies. It looks like the Small Engine Warehoue is the winner however there are several more engine providers including Farmers Exchange and tewarehouse. I guess my question still isn't answered - My JD 425 has a "John Deere version" of the "Kawasaki FD620D" engine and I want to know if I buy a "non-John Deere version" of the "Kawasaki FD620D" engine will I have any problems using it to repower my JD425 without searching for accurate wiring diagrams or exchanging many parts by trial and error? If you have experience with this engine changeout please be as specific with details as possible. Your experience will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for all the inputs.
