Subject: Chevy 2500 4x4 extended cab long bed (8')?

South Eastern ,ILL
Wondering how many have this set up? I now have a 06 regular cab 2500 long bed(8') and thinking about a 12 Chevy 2500 Extended cab 4x4 long bed.I really want the extra room with the extended cab, but don't want to give up my 8' bed.
Buy the time you get a diesel tank, tool boxes on sides full of tools,I carry a milk carton with bottle jack , grease gun ,tire wrench, 2 gal antifreeze & so on. Also 2- 2 1/2 gallons of engine oil & hydro oil, shovel, spade, scoop shovel, broom, handy man jack, 2or 3 log
chains, blocks &etc.See why I want an 8' bed? Are these trucks hard to get around, because they are longer or will it all come in stride? Thanks

I personally do not like them.
I feel they get too hard to get around, especially in town. Any extended or crewcab I own will have a short bed. That being said, I own a standard cab long bed.

I have a '06 long bed, crew cab 2500HD. I'm the exact opposite of the poster above. Will never own a truck with less than an 8' bed. Might as well buy a car. Mines not hard to get around with at all. Guess I buy trucks for more than grocery getters. Obviously most people get along just fine with the short box, as they constitute the vast majority of trucks I see on the road. Just wouldn't fit my needs well.

I have a 2006 GMC 3500, crew cab, long bed, wouldn't ever own a work pickup with anything shorter than 8' bed. They aren't bad to get around in town either you just have to take up two parking spots

I won't have another short bed truck for working out of. Just bought a 1 ton single rear gas extended long bed. Insurance and plates ended up cheaper on a one ton. It was also packaged with a lot of things standard that were extra on the 2500.

I'm thinking of ditching the extended cab and going to a regular cab next time. The thing just fills up with junk anyway.

Thanks for the input. I forgot to mention in the planting & harvest season I usually haul myself and 3 or 4 other people to the field every morning, short distance (20 miles or less) this is another reason for the extended cab.

I know one thing reg cabs are making a comeback around here. I can count 10 new trucks that Ive seen in the last month that were reg cabs with the full 8 ft box. You can still haul a couple off guys around in addition to your self if your cab isnt clutterd with stuff.

Regular cab long box for farm trucks. Crew cab short box for sundays and pulling the camper.

Have two crew cab long beds, an extended cab long bed, and a crew cab short bed. The short bed is pretty much worthless to haul anything, and the extended cab is not suitable for extra passengers. Would only look at long bed crews, otherwise might as well have a single cab longbed. If a gooseneck trailer is a consideration, while some people get by with a short bed, the long bed is better.

HA I did exactly this in December. Not the norm around here as everything is crew cab short boxes anymore but I ordered a 12 gmc ex cab long box after the dealer couldn't locate an 11 model. I was coming from a standard cab and just hated not having any room to throw stuff. I had nice tool boxes I didn't want to part with that fit the full length box. I too carry a few people along mainly in the fall and wanted the ability to carry 4 people, NOT 4 people in the front like I'd done way too many times. Crew cab was too long for my garage and personally I didn't care much if the guys in back were real comfortable since they weren't going to be riding in there for more than a half hour at the very most. I really don't think they act any different in length than a crew cab short box. Here's a pic...

Nice looking truck. The extra riders will surely find the seat in the extended cab better than 4 people in the front and possibly one tucked away in the bed for a short distance. Kinda glad to see others thinking the way I'm leaning.

I bought the long box, crew cab. I was worried about the getting around in town as well. After a while you hardly notice it. Granted, I take the wife's car to California or other populated places, but they really aren't that bad. Not to mention I used to drive Fords, the last one was an 02 1 ton, extended cab long box. A crew cab long box Chevy will turn circles inside of the Ford. The extra foot or two is very valuable for a work pickup, and barely noticeable the rest of the time.

Of course, when you can park a 7810 with a 4 row hiller on Main Street, our town may be long box friendly... ;)

Sometimes it's nice to have a place "to throw crap" that you don't want taking up space in the tool box or getting wet.

I'm on my 2nd ext cab long bed 2500. I don't think it's any harder to park in town than our Chevy Suburban. It has an "L"shaped fuel tank & a crossover tool box in the back. I also own a crewcab shortbed 1500. Not much room in the back if you put a crossover toolbox in it.

I have two 04 chevy pickups, a 3/4 ext. cab with shortbox and a 1 ton crew cab with a long box. I like the long box way better. When i pull my stock trailer if i turn too short the front of the trailer will hit the corner of the cab, the long bed won't. The crew with the long bed isn't too bad for turning, especially when you are used to driving a semi!

I got GMC 2500HD and Chevrolet long bed, Ext. cab trucks... Works good if you use a wheelchair.... Regular cab and crew cabs are about useless for me. The crew cab would wotk for me it it opened from the front and hinged at the rear. Like the long bed the best, wish they were 10' long!!! Also got a Honda Element for a go-for car/truck...

If I can not get a long bed I will not buy another pickup. I have an 07 1 ton long bed crew cab and do not have trouble parking. Even at walmart. I looked at an 012 long bed crew cab at Dodge. $57,000.

I have always had ext or crew long box pickups for my pulling pickups, last year wife talked me into a crew SB, the SB is the only thing I hate about the pickup besideds the small fuel tank that comes in the SB. Will definelty be going back to a LB again next time.

you get used to the longer wheelbase quickly. the stores with the 'straight in' parking places are a pain. just park farther away and no big deal in you take up 2 spots. i have a 96 chevy extended cab long box. have a tool box in front all the time, and if the fuel tank is in, there is still room for a few other things. i had a slide in camper for it, and had room to take the kids in the cab. i have great memories of our many family camping trips.
