Subject: 15" wheat with JD 1790CCS planter

South Central Nebraska

Has anyone tried planting 15" winter wheat with a JD 1790 planter? What seed disc would you have to use?

We are thinking about trading in our 12row 30 planter and 30' drill for one 16/32 row 1790CCS to plant corn, beans, milo and wheat.

I would be interested in any experience, good or bad, with any of these crops planted in 15" rows or thoughts on the 1790CCS planter in general.

Thanks, Brian

Some research on 15" wheat has been done at Ohio State, but I don't know how well that translates to your growing conditions.
http://extension.osu.edu/~news/story.php?id=4238 You should be able to google up more info too.
Dryland wheat is routinely planted in 14" rows in the Pacific NW, but in this case moisture is always the limiting factor for yield. Ten and 12 inch rows do not seem to reduce yields but 15" maybe going a little too far.

The 1790 has been a hot topic on here before many times, search the archives.

SE WASH
In the PNW, here under 12" rainfall, we raise on 16" JD HZ drills. If you have the rainfall the closer the better, the biggest reason is weed pressure. In the Spring we plant with 6" drills.

The topic of wheat yield w/ 15-inch planter vs 7.5-inch drill was discussed on this forum some months ago. A couple people had done side-by-side tests, and as I recall there was about a 10% yield penalty to the 15-inch rows. One of those was from the eastern Corn Belt.
