I have five silver dollars my grandpa gave me when I was a kid. He would give all his grand kids one apiece each Christmas. I have two 1921's, 1922,1923 & 1924. My wife says I should give them to our new grandkids (4 1/2 months old) for their new piggy banks we bought them for X-mas. Any idea what they are worth, I don't have a clue ?

I go here daily to check silver price and to get value of of certain silver coins. The dollar figure to the right of the coin in question is what the coin would bring if melted down and seperated to pure silver. To get an idea if the coin has numismatic value and numbers minted in that year just click on the coin in question. http://coinflation.com/ The 1921 could be either a Morgan or a Peace Silver Dollar and the 1922 and newer would be Peace Dollars. When silver was up around $45 this past year the melt value of a Morgan or Peace was bringing around $30-35, not that you would ever want to have them melted. Joe

Central NE

If they have been circulated...

90% silver,

71.5% of a full troy ounce

current price = $29/troy oz x .715 = $20.73

If it is in a case in perfect condition (no marks under microscope), then check a coin book before depositing in kids piggy bank.

I would wait until they are older and you can explain it is worth more than a dollar or they may buy a $80 happy meal with it someday.  (or deposit it at a bank which would value it at..... $1)

Good point! Gal in town told of when she worked at a Convenience store in Iowa. Several times during the summer some kids visiting their grandparents would come in the store to buy ice cream treats and pay with a handful of change. Thinking it was loose change the grandparents had saved over the years they began looking at the coins and noticed most were pre-1965, which contain silver. After that discovery it was always a fight for the clerks to serve the chidren at the counter. Joe

I think I would keep them until the young'uns are a little older.

This listing shows 1921 worth about $40 and it could be more depending on it's condition.

Here you go: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/

PCGS photograde; a "mint state" (MS) coin can actually have "mint marks" on the surface and still be considered un-circulated. These nicks happen during the minting, storing (in bags of $1,000 for $1 silver), and moving $1000 bags around with forklifts before the coins are released for circulation. Proof coins aren't handled in this fashion but regular issues are. With the exception of a few "better dates", there isn't much swing in the price of Peace dollars - I don't know if you have a Morgan or a Peace - Most bookstores sell the "redbook" from Whitman publishing that gives general retail prices based on grade. The "bluesheet" newsletter gives regular updates on the prices of better grade coins but it's by subscription only.

Any coin dealer (or online) will have small plastic cases made for the various coin sizes. They run about a buck apiece and will offer protection from fingers and the elements.

Another site for the Peace Dollars for circulation numbers and prices. Look for the mint mark located on the back, (see this site), and that may change value a lot. Joe http://www.coinstudy.com/peace-dollar-values.html and http://www.coinstudy.com/morgan-silver-dollar-values.html

Another thought would be to buy some current Silver Eagles or current production coin sets at a coin shop with dates to correspond to special events, etc. Joe

A coin is worth what a willing buyer is willing to pay a willing seller. You can check coin prices on Ebay to see what a willing seller is asking for their coins. You can check the Ebay history for a given coin to see what willing buyers have been paying willing sellers. Take a careful look at the photos and coin descriptions to get a feel for the value of coins in various conditions. By the way, the other posters have provided a lot of very accurate and useful information. I am very impressed with the other posters!
