Dairy's need close acres to haul manure to and chop corn silage.. We have penciled it out many times we could go out and way over pay land rent for all the land within 2-3 miles of our farm and it would make us money over driving a long distance like we currently do.. Places in Wisconsin the top land rent goes to the farm with the poorest soil test then they can dump the manure on.. Lots of places its dairy against dairy bidding up high rents and it makes sense... If you have the cows you NEED the land and close makes a world of difference.. Sure you could sell the manure (we do a little bit) but you will never get the return from it with out the crop..
