Why?? Rebuild what you have, unless the block is toast. You know what you have, but do not know what you are getting. (unless you own that combine...)

don't know anything about jd, but last winter we pulled a motor out of a ih 1460 combine and put it in a ih 1066, love it was half the cost of rebuild and more power. if you know the combine motor go for it.

Embarrass WI

I have not done it myself, but I know of at least 2 4020's in the area that have had 466's installed in them, so I know it can be done. I know one owner a little bit, he is satisfied. I do not know for sure if he put the motor in or bought the tractor that way.

I have later series 466 combine motors in both our 4430 and 4440. Worth the money and trouble, IMO.

Would like to have a 4030 with a bad engine to put the 329 out of our 6600 in. I hate to see good stuff go to scrap. Does anybody know of something else this motor would go in ?

I have taken a 404 i believe out of a 7700 an put in in a 4020 and it worked great. had to use the oil pan off the tractor, oil filter off the combine, injector pump and lines off the tractor, the damper pulley off the tractor and the manifolds of the tractor. This was about 10 years ago so might be forgetting some thing.

We have a 7700 engine in our 4630. Owned the combine for probably 5-6 years. The machine itself was pretty well shot when we were standing at an auction one day and bought a 4630 needing an engine and tires. We got cheap cheap horsepower.

Ya I've done a 4430, put a 7720 II motor (Electronic tach 466) in. Pan off of old motor, and we had to change frame rails (you shouldn't have ta) Also had to remove a plud in end of crankshaft to drive the small hex shaft for live power, better check with JD shop on that one. Really made a sweet machine outa her.

One thing you will run into putting any 404/466 into a tractor is the water pump location, look at the old one, if it is attached to the head it is several inches shorter than one attached to the block. Just John of Indiana has a solution for this but he wants several pieces of silver for the fix. Back end of block should be no problem, oil pan may be.

It's about 4 inchs to long, everything with bolt in but you will run into problems with the harmonic balancer and pump shaft. Also the fan will been in the radiator. You can use the frame rails off of a 4320 and stretch the hood about 4 inchs. Better to rebuild the orginal engine.

We've done a couple of 4020's with 7700 combine motors. Swap oil pan, p/u tubes, water pump, balancer, and manifolds. We were always able to adapt the fuel system.

Go here and ask Tim. He has probably done more of those swaps than anyone I know. Late model 6600s had 404 engines.

Ive done a 105 gas combine motor in a 4020. Had to use the tractor water pump, vibration damper, manifolds and throttle linkage.
I used the combine oil pan, just installed a 90 degree pipe elbow and pipe plug, I love having that spin on oil filter..

My original engine was cracked, the $400 combine engine had only 2400 hrs and runs like new.

I did a combine motor into tractor this winter. Not green but judging by the ring gear and starter gear, the engine hadn't been started 300 times. I'll miss my guess if that doesn't run for many moons.

The engine in the tractor is gas and we want to change it to a diesel.

Hey garvo is that IH smokin you on the track? I really thought a "hot 4430" would be better than a 1256. Does his 1256 have the 407, or has he put a wet sleeve 66 series motor in it?
