Hey Jon,
EXCELLENT summary and great explanation. You're pretty much spot on, although I do disagree with the last thing that you said about the plant not caring about the source. The former of the two approaches that you mentioned, blending, generally produces a much higher salt content than the 'hot mixes.' Plants DO care about salt, and thus they care about the source. Please note I am ***NOT*** saying that ours (or any other hot mix) is 'salt free.' If anyone ever tries to tell you that they will lie to you about other stuff, too. It's not possible to make a 'salt free' fertilizer whether blended or hot mix. However, the lowest salt content you can get is better than a higher salt content for sure. Additionally, the hot mixes are WAY less corrosive and thus easier on equipment.
