Subject: Pontiac G6 Wheel Bearing?

So. IL
We are having a noise on our 2007 Pontiac G6 that I can not locate. We first thought it was the tires(they sound like mud tires now), but the tire shop said it sounds like a bad wheel bearing. After driving it for a while, I look it home, removed the wheel covers, and used a temp gun on the wheel hubs, and they were all very close in temp. I can also not feel any end play in the bearings. Where to I go from here? Car has 87k miles on it. The tires are less than 1 year old, and the tire shop said that they look great. Thanks

wheel bearings should go more mile than that, but never know. if it is rumbling noise, might be bearing. i did both in my 2001 impala at 150k. napa wanted $300 for a good bearing, or $100 for a china braring that they said was no good. i got a federal mogel at advance auto for 150. replaced it, old one seemed rough, but still had noise. got a skf on ebay for $115 and replaced the other one. problem solved. be sure to get the right abs connector.

Does it quiet down on sweeping turns? When the wheel bearings went out in my grand prix they would get quiet when you turned the wheel.

Your right, wheel bearings should go longer than that but on the 06 chevy half ton i had both were out before 35k miles. One at 15k and the other side at 32k, so dont fool yourself into thinking that.

To the OP, can you track down what side it is coming from. I did a wheel bearing on a g6 of my buddys and they are not hard to do at all, does the car see gravel? Could be a rock stuck in the brakes somewhere, look for a groove.

I would bet quite a bit on the bearing theory. Just this last week, had one replaced on a '06 Buick van with 100000 on it. We had replaced tires last fall with Michelens and thought how could new passenger car tires sound like 35's on a 4X4. Tire dealer said bearing was bad, but I thought he was trying to hook me for some more money. Well, finally broke down to have some other stuff fixed on it at the car dealer, and he said bearing was bad. Had it replaced and good to go. (one of the rear bearings by the way)

What kind of tool do I need to pull the front hubs/bearing apart? Im thinking I have a bad right front, but will probably change both. Thanks

Put it on jack stands and run it ,that will prove -or disprove bearings .

Neighbor had a pontaic vibe car ,it had bearings go out at 35,ooo miles .

probably nothing special, iicr. good guaranteed metric sockets and a breaker bar. those caliper bolts are really in there tight. i had to heat the thread area on the bearing holder to break the bolt loose. wonder if they used locktite on it.

A lot of times wheel bearings only make noise under load, so there would be no noise on the stands. Patrick

Jack it up on stands and run it. Listen to both bearings on the knucle with a stethoscope or a big screwdriver held to the ear.
Most likely one of them is noisy. Very common issue on all GM vehicles.

You would still hear it with a stethoscope.

Embarrass WI

A Pontiac Vibe is really a Toyota with different trim.

usually when the load comes off the noise goes away,, if it sounds like the right side it usually is , i have changed about 20 wheel bearings in the past few years and have never changed the wrong side , i had noise on the last one i changed on my wifes envoy and used a heat gun after she came home from shopping and it was very very loud and the temp was exactly the same on both sides so i was stumped but i changed the bearing anyway and the noise was gone, the tools are usually just ur basic sockets , hammer and maybe a chisle to separate the bearing from the housing

Worked on cars for over 20 years and that is true most of the time. If you can drive the car while turning left and right to load/unload the bearings (think weight transfer) the bad bearing can usually be pinpointed. If the noisy bearing is on the left the noise will be louder turning right and quiet down turning left due to weight transfer. Patrick
