Subject: Cat C-15 won't start

I have a C-15 in a 2003 model International 9200i. I am pretty sure the motor is a 02' model. The past few times when starting it has had to crank alot longer than usual, then it starts, stumbles and cuts off. Crank it again starts, smooths out and is fine all day. Today go to start it cranks for awhile like usual, sputters dies and will not start again. I think the fuel might have bleed back but I'm not sure. I filled the fuel processor filter thing with fuel and bled the filter on the motor but it still wont start. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not very familiar with these newer truck motors. Thanks.

Do you have a hand priming pump? (above the secondary fuel filter)

If so, I think you should try and loosen #5 (fuel return check valve) in this photo. Loosen it about 3-4 full turns(if it comes out, just screw it in a thread or two)
After loosening, then hand pump the hand priming pump, it should pump reasonably easy, this should help flush/push out the air, in the cylinder head, that is around the injectors.
once, you felt you have pumped long enough, go ahead and SNUG up the #5 valve. ONLY snug(don't over-tighten!)
Now, hand pump some more=should feel firmer and harder to pump, then quickly jump in the cab and crank the engine.

Hopefully, you can get it started, but you still have problems, that are causing this; whether the engine is "sucking air" or maybe that #5 check valve is stuck open, thus allowing fuel to "bleed off" overnight and get replaced by air bubbles, up high in the cylinder head. OR maybe the transfer pump lip-seal is allowing air past it overnight, thus the fuel supply bleeds down, then next morning, that same transfer pump can't "prime" itself with solid fuel.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the housing on top of the secondary filter like in the picture but for the life of me I coudn't find any type of hand pump on it. I opened the plug 9- 10 - 8 in the picture to bleed air out the filter but it seemed to have fuel there. Where is the hand pump? Thanks.

I'll try something different, but look at the very first picture(on this entire post) and where you see those TWO holes above where the secondary fuel filter screws on. That is where CAT put a hand priming pump, IF you have one: otherwise it is just a little, short cover(with a bump on it) and two different sized bolts.(by-pass cover=cheap replacement, instead-of a hand priming pump)

It just has the cover. So do you do the same procedure and just crank the motor or??

No I still can't see it. Something weird has happened because I can't see the first picture anymore and I could see it earlier but from your describtion this one doesn't have the hand pump

Yes, you could do that. You may want to remove it, then screw it in a little, then you will know that at least a couple of those threads are engaged, so it doesn't fall out, while you are cranking.(probably make a big fuel mess, if it fell out.

It will leak some fuel anyways, just doing it loosely.

I do recommend that someday you purchase a hand priming pump and gasket and install it. Because it has two one-way check valves, built into them, it actually helps "hold" fuel in the entire system, even overnight.

Pump  part #  = 137-5541
gasket part #  = 1P0436

That "bleed plug" you had removed earlier; Make sure that "inner" o-ring is ok. It must not be cut or missing.

I will purchase the pump. I can see where it will be very handy to have in situations like this. This was a big fleet truck (Walmart) so maybe the truck was ordered without one to help them rollback prices. haha

The o-ring seemed to be in good condition. Thanks.

Actually, I heard that Paccar, asked CAT to ship them WITHOUT hand pumps, to lower the wholesale price of the engines to the OEM truck builders.

My opinion was it turned out to be kinda a bad idea.

Rollback prices=LOL

We had the same problem this winter with 2002 C-15, changed hand pump and check valve. Truck starts normal now.
