Subject: cat 3306 broken exhaust manifold bolt

HI all,
I have a cat 3306 in my Steiger that has a broken exhaust manifold bolt and its been leaking for about a hundred hours.
The stud is broke off flush with the cylinder head.
Other than taking off the cylinder head, is there a way of extracting the stud?
Its not in a real accessable place with the engine still in the tractor, its the last stud closest to the firewall end.
I see stud extractor sets for 3400 series engines for sale, but havent seen extractor kits for the 3300 series.
Sure hate to take off the head...but maybe its for the best? There might be more broken studs before I get the exhaust manifold removed I suppose.
Thanks in advance

Mine has the same stud broken off in the same way. The manifold gasket is leaking, I am considering fixing it. Looks like a tussle. I borrowed a Steiger from a neighbor a few years back, he wouldn't take any payment so I paid to have his fixed (same problem) was not that expensive to have the local shop do it. Seems to be a pretty common problem.

I have never been around a 3306 but we have alot of 3406,s..............grab a big hand full of nuts and mig weld the inside of the nut over the broken stud.......be patient ....maybe have a six-pack setting close to you.....and it will finally come out.....i have never got skunked yet doing this

you would be surprised how cheap it is to have done. a local machine shop/welder came out and pulled 4 out for $200 on the truck, its a century class truck thats a pain to get too. i cant waste a day screwing with it for as cheap as they did it for. they said they have a 85-90% success rate removing them without pulling head

There's a few options to try before pulling the head, the most popular being welding a washer and nut to the broken stud with a wire feed. I have used a small plasma cutter to remove a couple 3/8" broken studs that were at the back of the head and hard to get at. Kind of hard on consumables but got the job done.

Thanks everybody for your advice...I apreciate it.
I hope we can do this on the tractor.

sw corner ia.
how many hours on the motor? if it has a lot take off the head, reman it from cat. put in new injectors while you are in there and a new water pump if it is old too. check the turbo, they don't last forever. a reman head from cat with new valves cleaned up seats will be around 1500. probably going to need a new exhaust manifold too since you have been running it with a blown gasket. hopefully the head is still a good core.

I just saw this post so I am pretty far behind as it were.

had the same thing , can not remember which stud , there was a tapped hole , right beside it .
made a clamp, 3/8 flat with a hole , bolt and furl and clamped it down. lasted 5 years until the engine needed rebuilt
