Subject: Best tractor to buy 120hp used $25,000 and under

i have a friend that would like to buy a used tractor for doing all his field work with. They had a 1066 but died so are looking for a tractor to plant, cultivate, would be a one tractor operation as they only have 100 acres but would like to get another 100. Also looking for a 6R11R planter. What would everyone recomend that he look for. I said the MX serious were very good but a little more than he wanted to spend. I said a nice MX100 or 110 with loader 4x4 would do everything for them. What about a 5250 maxum tractor were they good. He said he found one with 6000 hours for $28,000 is that good no loader? I am all red so not up on the other colours that are good.

Thanks for the help.

I would look for a 1486 or a 1086. Nice tractors and a good enough cab for the little bit of time he would be in it. Plus you can pick them up for 15000-17000.

Would have to agree.........MX's are nice, and so are the 52xxCIH's. Since you are using for tillage, going from a 1066, you may be disappointed. Again never usded a MX or 52xx but seem a little light for heavy work.

For $25K you should be able to find a cherry 86 series pus have enought left over to buy a nice small utility tractor if you want a loader or light chore tractor

I like the 1486 or 1086 idea. But the 8050 is the best for my money, because you can get one in fwd and they are 125 hp. or better, good tractor. Bruce get a hold of me in profile. I know where there are two that are in good shape. I bought a 9150 fwd 1785 hrs. for 25000.00 and love it. I never thought I would own orange but they are a lot of tractor for there money. I am not a dealer just know where two are. Like the others mentioned have enough left to buy loader tractor. Look through trator House . com should be alot of them in there. I just bought a TN 75 D New Hooland with loader fwd, for less than 30000.00 875 hrs.

The only thing nice about a 86 series is the cab. That series was the beginning of the end for IH. He would be really disapointed with the shifting coming from a 1066, and looking over the fuel tank to see the drawbar. For 25000 pretty sure you could find a 7110 magnum and then you would have something still looking over a fuel tank though but way better everything. I would steer them into the direction of a JD before a 86 series and I like red.

nobody else will prolly aggree with me but i really like my allis 8050. I fell that for the time frame(mid 80's) they had the best cab. I have two of them with over 8000 hours each and have cost me very little. one has had a rebuild and the other one seams just as stong as when it was new. one is power shift and one is manual.

I'm in the Ford camp..Check out Roberts Farms Equip in Chesley Ont. Good selection of older Fords. Especially like a TW 15 FWD they have. Bullet proof older power house. Like others said 401's a good motor and transmission won't need anything...they last and last. Personally I have a 7710 Ford . I know they are a little smaller than what you want but they are rated at 90 but few are under 110hp. Same as above ...tough,relable and good on fuel. The nicest would be less than 25000.

actually the Ford 8630 would be more in line with the hp requirements he was looking at.

How do the 8630 and 8730 compare?

8630 is basically the same tractor in 150hp range. The nose will be shorter with fuel tank above motor instead of up front.

which are you saying is in the 150 hp range?  the 8630 or the 8730?

It looks to me like the 8730 is the larger (hp) tractor.  Correct?

IIRC, in this series Ford offered the 8630 is in the 120 HP range. 8730 around 140 HP and 8830 @ 170 HP. The two smaller tractors ith the turbo 401 and the 8830 also aftercooled. Never been around one but always thought a 8x30 tractor would be a nice upgrade from my x600 tractors with tin can cabs. 401 is a good engine if the coolant has been taken care of. Economical on fuel as anything of the era.

I like Whites, they've treated us well and there are gobs of them out there to be had for under $20,000.

Lot of tractor for the money.

I'd probably consider a 9130/9150 Deutz Allis as well.  I've heard good things about the motors and well, the rest of the tractor is a known commodity.  Probably even more tractor for the money than a silver White.

Agreed, his best money would be to find a nice White 140 or 145 MFWD. 5.9 Cummins, and a better cab than most of the ones mentioned here. Tight, quiet, and comfortable. Also, very very bulletproof.

Only problem would be finding a "nice" 140/145 mfwd for under $25,000.  Around this area a nice 2wd would bring $25,000+.

I think those are great tractors but those are the highest priced models that White ever built for what you get.  For what those tractors sell for there are newer (6124/6125/6144/6145) tractors for very little more $.

Even the bigger Whites of the same age (8.3L cummins) seem like better deals than the 120/125/140/145 tractors.

I think there are better deals either newer or older.

You're probably close to Charles City. A nice one wouldn't bring $20k here. But Tennessee is a very weak White market.

I don't like the 5088 idea since they thought it was a great idea to run the fan through the radiator. Most of the cheap whites have perkins diesels in them and would take a case of ether to start them.

The biggest White tractor with a Perkins diesel engine was the model 2-110 with 108 pto hp. Smaller than what the poster wanted.

White tractors with 120 pto hp or larger would have a Cummins 5.9, or if about 160 and bigger a Cummins 505 cube engine.
Or if older a 478 cube Herk I-6.

And the model 2-180 had a Cat model 3208 V-8.

Either to start a Perkins. What are you talking about? I have never used either to start my White 2-105 unless it is cold outside.

A engine that needs either to start far more than a White 2-105 - A 4020.

you should beable to find a 4250 that has over 5000 hrs, and still be in that price range it would last for ever on a 200ac farm and be twice the tractor than the ones listed above save for a few red ones

There are some really reasonable White tractors on Tractor House but I am not sure you should promote them so much Bobby. I'm saving up to buy a 120 hp White FWA. The best 2-110 I can find. So far I only have $26 and 35 cents but it is always good to have goals in life!
I think most people are asking, what JD tractor can I buy for $25,000 and under. Probably a model "D."
(Actually I have no idea what a model "D" is I just picked a random letter out of the alphabet. I'm not so much a JD collector, I leave that to the neighbors)

LOL, your $26.35 sounds similiar to my situation when I was about 8 yrs old and decided I was going to save up to buy a Corvette.

Hey that reminds me there is probably a piggy bank of mine somewhere in my parents house that has a little money in it yet, better find it and start adding to it if I'm ever going to fulfill that goal.

About that JD, for under 25k I think you could get a decent 4020, might even get a cab :-)

I have worked on a few 354 Perkins and if they start hard it usually is caused by someone who didn't know what they were doing when they worked on the head. Deck height is critical when working on the older Perkins diesels.

North Liberty and South Bend, Indiana
I'd go far a 94 series Case or Case/IH. Even a 90 series would be a great tractor. The 2294's were 125 horse and could be had with fwa. Most with fwa sell for under $25k. Most with out fwa sell for under $18k. You could get a 3294 which is 165 horse and fwa but it is possible to put a dual speed pto in it. The large framed tractors only have 1000 pto's.

I have a 3394 with the 6 speed power shift, rebuilt engine with less the 200 hours. Can be on your truck for 13,500 us dollars. Only catch is it has a compression leak into the radiator, I'm assuming its something with one of the head gaskets. Just dont really need the tractor and havent had time to chase down the issue.
