Subject: How do I stop my treadmill from shocking me???

Ontario, Canada

I'm just wondering if any of you know a good way for me to stop getting static shocks from my treadmill?  It's brand new and is grounded fine, I can't seem to find a solution to this problem.  If I plug in my ipod with earphones I will get a shock in my ears every 4 seconds... it hurts so bad it's not even funny... so I no longer use my earphones.  If I check my heartrate or grab the metal part of the bars I will also get a nice electrical reminder that I have a static problem.  Any ideas??? LOL

Return the treadmill to the store and run up and down the road?

hahaha very funny... if it wasn't -23C and I didn't have 3 young kids in the house maybe that would be an option for me but it isn't.

Is it dry in your house?

Some types of pants are very bad for creating static electricity, esp when running.  Maybe try different clothes.

It's possible that your treadmill is grounded properly -- but that you are not. You are insulated from it by the rubberized walking surface. Technicians who work on electronics wear grounding straps that connect their wrist to their work surface. (Radio Shack has them for about $6.) Something like that might help.

I believe you will need to drive a 1/2" copper clad ground rod in the ground outside the window, string a 10 gauge stranded coated wire between the ground rod and the treadmill, secure the wire to each with an approved wire clamp, should rid you of your problems.

Is the treadmill set up on carpet ????? Perhaps just try some neoprene pads between the treadmill feet and the carpet.......

Keep us posted, sounds interesting !!!!

LOL... so I need to connect myself some how to the treadmill and buy some static guard? Anytime I touch it or have anything attached I get shocked. No, it's not on carpet, it's on concrete (right next to the fuse panel for the house). I have two electricians in my family, maybe I should call them! :)

The charge you are getting is from a build up of electrical potential. You need to slowly drain that off so you don't feel it. The potential exsists between YOU and the Metal pieces. I would think some kind of a ground strap would take care of it. It doesn't have to be much. Just any small piece of a conductor. I think they make something like that for working on computers.

you need to wear non-plastic shoes.
Try it barefoot or socks with not much synthetic stuff in it.
Is your humidity 50%+ ? Below 35/40% I get a shock of all switches, metal doors, etcetera.

1. Go buy an outlet checker ($5 at the hardware store) to verify proper grounding of the outlet (or call in the family). And then verify with a resistance meter that the treadmill is in fact grounded to its plug.

2. Raise the humidity level in the air.

3. Ground yourself with a ground strap. Make certain that it has a break-away feature.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like there is something wrong with the treadmill itself. I can't believe you should have to do anything other than get on it and start moving. The only possible fault might be an extremely dry house which is possible in this temperature, but still...

When your on the tredmill, are your hands are on rubber or plastic hand grips ??

Try keeping one hand / finger on the exposed metal frame of the mill.
If thats hard or impossible, use a static wrist strap to the metal mill frame to discharge the static electricity as it forms. That way the voltage will never get high enough to shock you.

is let my hands touch the frame at the front of the tread mill each swing of my arms, static doesn't build up that way. Works for me.

If the treadmill has a 3-prong plug and the house is wired correctly that grounding should already be done. The fact that she is getting shocked when she touches the metal parts indicates the path to ground is there already.

Sally do you use one of those "dead man" safety clips when you are on the treadmill? You know the lil clip that you are supposed to clip to your shirt, so if you call the treadmill stops? If you don't try using it, it may allow a path for the static to discharge continually.

Thanks for all your suggestions... and yes I always have the safety clip on just in case. Hopefully I can get this figured out :)

Try using a different safety clip, maybe rig up something made from wire will act as a ground between you and the treadmill.
