Subject: Input on a 4040s JD tractor

North Carolina
Guy down the road is looking to sell his 4040s is has 5500 hrs, HFWD, cab, in so so shape.

What's the down low on this import 4040s, good and bad.

Also, what's the good and bad of the HFWD. I personally don't like the HFWD, but what can be the problem of not using it, except on the rare occasion.

The motor has France on the plate.

Thanks

We have a 4040 with a loader on it, 2wd. I think John Deere used the 4040 to use up the old 30 series parts. It has the same rear end as a 30 series and has the smaller 404 engine without a turbo. Ours does not have a cab and is relatively trouble free, but for some reason I just don't like it. If you could swing the extra cash, a 4050 or 4250 with MFWD would be a better tractor.

Is it actually a 4040S built overseas or a 4040 from Waterloo.  The info is kinda conflicting because I always thought the 4040 from Waterloo used the 404 engine with the option of hydraulic front wheel drive (HFWD) and 4040S had the 300 series engine with the option of mechanical front wheel drive (MFWD.

It is not HFWD, it's really a HFWA. There is no drive to those things, but merely a very little assist. The only thing that makes them better tha 2WD are the bigger front tires. If you've ever owned a MFWD you will be badly disaappointed in the HFWD, it's nothing close. If it was made overseas it should have a place for a liscense plate on the top back of the cab and turn signal lights on the front sides of the hood. I also believe JD didn"t offer the MFWD until the 50 series, which is what would recommend if you want FWD.

If you want to get technical, JD called it "Power Front Wheel Drive."  Thats straight out of the manual and brochures.

Yes it's a 4040s, it has the lights on the side of the hood, trailer plug, pull up emergency brake and all.

No emergency brake on our 4040 . It must be foreign. A/C only problem I've seen .
