Oil leak on 8.3 Cummins

Subject: Oil leak on 8.3 Cummins


Glasgow, Ky		Have an 8.3 Cummins in our CIH 1680 combine.  Has an oil leak which appears to be on the backside of the injection pump between the pump and the engine but it could be elsewhere with the fan blowing the oil.  The oil is dripping off of the bottom of the injection pump and is making a mess (and fire hazard) with the bean dust.  Am sure it is engine oil and not diesel fuel that is leaking.  Any ideas on what might be causing the problem?

Hopkinsville KY		we had a 9230 that had a leak there, the gasket behind the timing cover pushed out, have to remove the cover to replace

The best thing to do is clean the area to make sure where the leak is truely coming from. The timing cover & timing case are known to leak. The pump could also be leaking as you say(known to happen also), but make sure to know where the leak is really at because if it is the cover or case the pump does not have to come off. If it is the pump the best thing to do is remove it and send it to a shop. If it is the cover and or timing case there is an updated cover. Also there is and update for the gasket between the timing case and engine block. I don't recomend doing the timing case job yourself, as the pump gear and cam gear have to be removed. Timing then becomes an issue and the gears are press fit. The cam gear has to be heated to be re-installed, and can still be a problem even when it is heated. There is a gasket between the pump and timing case that could leak, I have not seen this happen though.

Leeds, North Dakota		if its not crank seal, there is a gasket that blows out, cummins has a updated front cover, engine has to come out, scott.

I have peformed the timing cover & case gasket replacement without enginge removal. Any good CNH dealership sould be able to preform the leak repair without removing the engine!

I agree the space is limited, but our shop has re-sealed many timing cases on tractors and combines and we have never removed the engine to do so.

NW Iowa		check the timing cover closely on the pump, ive had a few of them leak there, a very easy fix

There is also a small o ring in the mounting flange of the injector pump where pressurized oil is fed to the pump.

nebraska		Spray the area clean and blow dry first to find leak. If from between engine block and front aluminum cover then the updated front cover gasket must be installed as stated above. If from the injection pump there are several possibilities. There is the large oring sealing the pump to the front cover. The small oring sealing the oil pressure port supplying the pump. And we have had several Bosch pumps that have had the four screws that retain the font plate to the pump housing right behind the drive gear come loose and let the gasket leak. The best thing to do is replace the gasket and retorque the screws, but we have also just cleaned the threads, added locktite, and retightened. That works fine to get you by. Could be the plugs in the bottom of the pump housing leaking also.
