I’m working on the brakes on a 93 Volvo semi. It has automatic slack adjusters. How do you release these adjusters so you can back them off to loosen the brakes to remove the brake drums? These slack adjusters are not the kind where you remove a plug and on the plug is a little spring and a locking pawl. These have some kind of arrow on the side that lines up with a notch and is held in place with bolt on top. On the side is a 7/16 nut that you can turn to tighten the brakes but you cannot turn it the other way to loosen them. TIA !

Unit I hope this helps. I ran into the same situation (I think) when I replaced the brakes on a friends Volvo. Ended up I just wasn't turning the wrench hard enough in the other direction. If you turn it back hard enough, it should click many times and back the brakes off. Thats the way this one was anyways, give it a try. I was using a 12" 3/8's rachet to get the tug. On our IHC and Pete, they take a special flat tool to raise the bolt up a little in order to back it off.

And then throw them in the junk.

I hate automatics, seems like if they aren't adjusting themselves up to tight and locking up tires or backing themselves off until they do nothing the automatics aren't working right.

I don't think it would hurt anybody especially "professional" truck drivers to crawl there fat butt under a truck once a week and look things over. And adjust there manual slacks.

OK, I'm done with my rant. Sorry. The guys are right just pull extra hard and they will make a bad crunching noise to back them off. Sorry again about my rant, truckers really get under my skin.

How come some people are always ready with a camera at such crucial moments? I suppose I am too busy turning turn signals off and such. Another question, why can't they let truckers have self cancelling signals and windshield wipers that work? They mickey mouse a truck together and then send it out to run a million plus miles. DUH!

about truck drivers. As always we've been getting feed hauled in. Every damn one of them thinks he's the greatest driver on the planet. As soon as they get off the concrete they are as worthless as teets on a boar. What part of "you're only going to get two chances to get yourself in position to dump is hard to understand. Overcorrect this way and then undercorred that way and before you know it they're all kittywampus and have the ground tore up. I've met one guy that drives for a living that's worth a hoot.

Would you guys be interested in joining my buyers club? It'll work something like Sam's Club but we will only buy products that truckers don't haul.

I with ya on the Automatics, give me the ole adjustables any day, they seem to be better for the dusty gravel conditions which is about the only miles ours see's.

As for truckers, in general, Ill keep my mouth shut, though like engineers, there are some good guy's doing the job.

Good luck

just back of enough to get drum off

then go forward to get new shoes back inside the drum

they go forward over center nicer than backwards all the way

dot says after like 1995 it is not legal to replace automatic with manuals

We have international truck which have rockwell automatic slack adjusters. They have a button head pull-pawl on the inside. Pull the spring loaded button up and the worm shaft turns freely in reverse. There are some adjuster tools listed on e-bay that you could look at the pics. I just pull button head up with a gasket scraper and adjust with 5/16 square rachet wrench that is normally used for A/C.
I think if you use the BIG WRENCH "hear bad crunching sound" your slack adjusters will no longer work either.
