Subject: Technical Answer...genetics

1 + 1 doesn't equal two in the genetics world... in the case of corn, it may be equal 3.5. Cotton world...about 2.5 (Hazera cotton is a cross of Pima & Acala - Chembred did true hybrid uplands). Sugarcane is another crop that is crossed this way to try to exploit the best characteristics of both parents. Lets say a seed company works with a line or inbred variety that yields 80 bu/ac, but has high oil contents, natural resistance to cut worms, & is a RR corn. The seed company is also working with another line or variety that yields 110 bu/ac, has exceptional oil characteristics, and contains BT technology. Marry them together and get 200 bu/ac, natural resistance, high oil, and BT/RR. Hybrid corn was the biggest advancement in the breeding world in the 20th century.
