Subject: 2188 combine question.....I need more speed!!

Belzoni, Mississippi
I posted this question about a year ago but i thought i would re visit it. My combine is very slow. It will only go about 16.3 mph. I guess you would say that is a safe speed but all my land is spread out over the county and I need to get there in a timely matter. When the hydrostat is pushed all the wall extends the module on back of the combine all the way. I have even changed hydraulic filters after someone suggested it. Any suggestions? When its going down the road, the rpm goes down toaround 2430-2440. Could the throttle need adjusting? What about the injector pump? Hydrostat doesnt seem week. So.....

Rpm sounds about right. Your post is unclear but you could have someone ride and with the cable unhooked push the hydro control lever to speed the combine up all the way and see if it goes any faster than the hydro handle pushed all the way in the cab. This wouldnt need to be done in third gear. Second gear wot. would be fast enough to tell if there is a speed differance. This could be done to see if the hydro handle/cable is properly adjusted to get the most forward speed. Goodluck, be careful. If it has the two speed hi/lo tranny, bending the microswitch below the fuse box for third gear will allow the machine to drive in third high.

Why would i need to bend the mocroswitch. The high low switch seems to work.

the micro switch on the shifter locks the 2 speed out in third gear, by bending it, it allows the 2 speed to function in 3rd gear.

I think there is an adjustment under the cab. You would need to talk to a tech but they need to add or remove 'washers' to increase the pressure to the hydro motors.

First check the hydrostatic level as previous post described but being from Mississippi I'd say you have rice gears in the transmission. Not sure if they can be swapped or if you need a different set. Those gears have a road speed of about 16 MPH with 20.8-38's.

I'm sure Tim is right you have Rice Combine gears 34/38's instead of 37/35 in normal grain combines just went and looked at the manual and that is all you willl get is 16 or 17 mph with any tires.

The rice gears may be your problem, if not try this. With the hydro cable properly adjusted so neutral is at the step in the hydro lever slot, then with the engine off push the handle all the way forward. Check the lever on the hydro to see if you are getting full travel by disconnecting the cable and pushing the lever to see it will go farther than the cable will pull it. If that is the problem the only fix is to make the lever on the hydro shorter to get more throw. On mine I removed the lever and heated it at the bends and tightened them making the lever shorter center to center, gained 1.5 mph.

Based on the answers you have gotten so far it looks like your combine is running at the top speed it is designed for.  Comparing a top speed of 16mph to 20 mph means you would save 7 minutes on a 10 mile trip, 20 mile trip would be 14 minutes, etc.  Is that time savings really important enough to justify the increased safety concerns with a faster travel speed?

You have the lower geared transmission. My 2188 had that also and the road speed would drive anyone crazy. With the head on 15.8 mph was all she'd do. You will either have to live with it or do tranny work. My 8010 goes like 23 mph which is like warp speed compared to the 2188!
