I'm sure it depends on the specific engine, but in my experience with an 1104 I had to place a quarter inch spacer under the #1 intake valve rocker and roll the engine over by hand until the piston contacted the valve. Using a cam wheel I made note of the angle and rolled the engine over the other direction until it contacted the valve again. By using the middle value of the two crank positions found, I had TDC. This was following a procedure from the factory service manual, no less.

Mid-Missouri | How familier are you with the 1104. I have an 1104C-E44T in a Gehl 7810 skidsteer and looking for the strongest starter available. Here is what I came up with but it cost over $400. It looks like it is meant for the bigger brother 1106. Do you think it would fit? http://www.iskra-ae.com/eng/docs/new_applications_march_2008.pdf Page 17-19, 17 in particular.

NM | I just did my perkins in my NH Telehandler. On it you have to remove the front gear cover and the marks are on the cam and pump drive gears.

Not overly familiar. I just have an engine we received for near scrap prices due to a spun cam bearing. We replaced the cam bearing and got the engine running, but haven't attempted to do anything to it.

To illustrate for Krantz... I took this picture when I did the cam bearing on our engine. I used a sharpie to highlight the timing mark so I could see them easier. From the factory they are laser etched and can be a bit tough to spot. (perkins5.jpg) Attachments ---------------- perkins5.jpg (89KB - 2760 downloads)

Boonville, IN | What is the age of the engine or the model number of the equipment that the engine is in. On the older Perkins engines ( up to mid eighties, early 90's) the injection pumps were dummy splined. The three bolts that hold the injection pump on are in slots. There is usually a mark on the base of the pump that the injection pump rebuilder puts on showing the timing and you will find a scribed mark on the block to line it up with. The newer perkins are different than this to time.

That way it is on my Massey Ferguson 275 tractor with a 248 Perkins engine in it. I did what you describe when remove the injector pump to have it rebuilt a few years ago and line up the marks on the pump and the camshaft housing.
