Subject: Chevy transmission for 6.2 diesel?

Transmission went bad in my 1983 Chevy 6.2 diesel and the local transmission shop says only a transmission from another 6.2 will work? What is different about the 6.2's versus a 350 that won't let it bolt up? Anybody got a good 4 speed laying around? TIA

We have an '84 GMC 6.2, been parked for 10 years, but the tranny was good.

You can use any TH trans. In 83' you likely have a TH700r4? Any 700r4 will bolt right up. Its the converter thats different. Even the vacuum shift can is fine as you have a vac pump on the engine. The converter will even bolt up, just that the one used for the diesel has a different lockup setup.

I had a blazer that had the r4 behind a 6.2. It went bad and I put a TH350 in it. Only thing I had to buy, as it was a 4x4, was the trans mount pedistal. The 350 is a shorter length trans than the 400 or 700r4. Well, that and a 3speed indicator for the dash.

In donzilla, which started out with a 6.2 and TH400, I bolted up a 454 engine. I even used the diesel converter. Works great. Only difference is that when I let off the throttle, the engine goes to idle with little holding back abilities. Just like the diesel 6.2 did.

Was always told that Oldsmobile trans would fit. But seriously do your self and your operation a favor and do like they do in the Iran. Get five gallons of gas and a match invite the neighbors over and have early ROMADOD party. Then go get something that won't leave you stranded every where you go. A 6.2 chev NEVER was worth fixing.

SOoooooo, ROMADOD,

What is that ????????? Is that like a " Friction Fire " ???

And NO, an Olds tranny won't fit, has to be a Chevrolet bolt pattern on the 6.2 Litre, The Olds trans would fit the older 5.7 Litre diesel though. But that too is a bigger waste of money to do.

Can't the tranny shop just rebuild it? I have a 700R4 diesel tranny, good innards but case is cracked that if you need inside parts to put in your case. Email below if that would help and you're close enough. I'm in Central Ohio. Ted

Diesels used a different convertor. The internals of a TH 400 were the same. I would have it rebuilt.

everybody is correct so far, Only diff is the Tourqe Convertor due to differnt engine RPM,s
I just lost the 6.2 in my 84 chevy, it makes a bad knocking noise, i'd sell the tranny/T-case thinking of putting my 350 700r4 and t-case in it.

You want a 400 or a late 700. 350 will fit but it will not hold up. There is an allison torque converter which is a good improvement, also. A 400 with the allison converter will be the end of transmission problems.
