Subject: Time to defend ourselves... farming is under attack.

N. IL
My wife has been doing a lot of reading on the latest attacks on US corn production, especially in the midwest. Most lately a CSI episode, a documentary called King Corn, a Time Magazine article, and a USA Today editorial. Modern agriculture is being pursued today as was the tobacco industry in the 1990's.

Be certain you are being a truthful and informative advocate for your business and the industry. Several of these farmers in this link have been less than helpful to all of us. They were part of the documentary that is getting a bunch of publicity right now. I hate to advertise for slanted propaganda, but it is imperative that we understand how the public perception of farmers is changing.

If you know these guys, ask them why they would speak out without thought to their words. We have to be careful how we discuss our business as most people have no recent connection to farming or even the risk of being self-employed.

This movement towards smaller farms and local production is a nice idea for those who want to participate. However, this will tarnish production agriculture in the process. As we are waiting for dry harvest weather, take time to understand this issue. This is not going away. Just being quiet and unassuming will lead to more regulations and unjustified scrutiny of our business.
