SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ | Going on a fishing trip to ontario, was told they changed the rules on taking potatoes across the border?? Funny because the same idaho potatoes one buys in MN are the same one buys in canada!!But you can't take them across the border !! I have some fresh ones ready in my garden, sure would taste good with fresh walleye.

Walnut Grove MN USA | I don't know if they have changed the rules or not but I have taken some across without problem but they were purchased. They have never asked about taters. I think you may have a problem with homegrown ones though if caught. My guess is they don't want the dirt and potential diseases coming across. Taking meat labeled "not for sale" will be confiscated. Where you going?

Rolla, ND | Probably the blight outbreak out in the northeast. After the major retaliers spread it all over, then they clamp down so you don't spread it. Or it could be because they've got some people trying to grow seed potatoes. Who knows, such things change all the time.

Graymont Illinois | I got caught, made me throw them in the dumpster. 1or 2 years ago.

SW Saskatchewan | You are entering another country! Just found it is easier not to cross the border with any food product...and the US does get particular pecky about citrus. And seed potatoes are a big export to US, don't want to jeopardize that with disease or pest.

NW Washington | I would not try to take any raw fruit or vegetables across the border. Potato growers are real fussy about getting diseased potatoes and there have been some serious peeing contest between Canada and the US over seed potatoes. Potato disease is a big deal for spud growers. Have you got your passport or special drivers license so you can get back into the USA? Rules have recently changed.

SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ | Yes have the passport. What gets me is the same potatoes they made us dump at the border, we bought in canada. Same brand ,same origin. Idaho Makes no sense at all.

Idaho Makes no sense at all. It's that peeing contest that a couple others mentioned. Oh yes, the citrus thing going the other way has always made me laugh. No good carrying Florida oranges back into your fine country!

Aberdeen MS | Just a sure fire way to get you spend money north of the border. Everyone has to eat. By limiting what you can bring across, they increase the dollar spent "there". Your license will cost you an extra $9 this year. That is the fee to set you up with your own personal ID number so that in the future you will only need to "renew" your plastic card electronically. If you get nailed for over limit, you can't just get another license somewhere else and go again. Your permanent number will flag you.
