Iowa | A farm that we purchased has a 24 ft bin equipped with an older Sukup Stirway. I would estimate that the machine is 30+ years old. It has a single stirring auger.
It was running fine at the beginning, but now we are having some problems with it. The stir auger traveled all the way out to the wall and back to the center. But when it arrived at the center, it engaged the "plunger" rod to reverse direction, but the horizontal screw stopped rotating and, consequently, the stir auger just sat running in the center of the bin and did not travel back out to the wall again. In the electrical box that is immediately before the small motor that powers the horizontal screw, we found a bad wire going to the component that is about the size and shape of pack of cigarettes (what is this component? - a capacitor, resisitor, or something else?). We replaced the bad wire and the horizontal screw began working again. The stir auger traveled back out to the wall, reversed direction and then came to the center again. However, once back at the center, the same thing happened. Plunger engaged to change directions, but the horizontal screw stopped moving, leaving the stir auger running stationary in the center of the bin. The small motor that powers the horizontal screw is very hot to the touch, but it is not turning.
Any advice would be appreciated. Can someone tell me what that cigarette pack shaped electrical component is? Perhaps it needs to be replaced? Also, there is a small push button switch (somewhat like a doorbell) directly below the shaft turning the stir auger. It is hooked into the same junction box as the mercury switch and looks like if the stir auger somehow came low enough, this switch would be engaged. I pushed on this switch and it didn't seem to affect the action of the stir auger. Any ideas what this switch is? Finally, does anyone know how to adjust the tension of the drive belt. It looks the bolts from which the motor hangs are welded into place. I can't see anyway to tighten the belt running between the main belt and the pulley which powers the stir auger.
Does anyone no where I could find an operators manual for a vintage Stirway? Doesn't look like Sukup's website has any support files, but I have not tried calling the company yet.
Thanks in advance!
