Shaftsbury, Vermont (SW VT) | Neighbor bought, third hand or better, a 715 combine a couple of years ago. It is a step up from his tired old 4400 gasser, but he's worked on it enough !!
Problem now is an engine running issue. He's just getting started on corn, both because of the wet weather we had, and also we were late getting frosted, and he'd like for it to field dry some. The combine ran fine for the first couple of days, but yesterday it sort of bogged down in power, smoked white, and even sounded like it "backfired" a couple of times. He shut down and checked it all over, and then restarted and went on like nothing happened for a while. It did this last fall, and we changed fuel filters and he finished the season alright. While doing pre-season checks this fall, I checked the strainer before the electric pump, and it was clean, and fuel flows freely from the tank. Today I checked this again, and changed the filters (whoever decided to put CAV filters in such a god-forsaken place must have not been a person who ever would have had to change them). I just talked to him on the phone and it ran super all day today. I did ask him to check the vent on the fuel tank and make sure it is clear. has anyone got any other suggestions?
The electric pump isn't the original one. Is it possible that the automotive pump that's on it now hasn't got as much pressure as the original, and even a little bit of filter plugging can cause trouble? Can anyone give me the pressure spec that I should see; either before or after the CAV filters? Any help would be appreciated. Oliver Durand
