Subject: application hogging internet?

NC Iowa
i have an xp computer that has work ok. recently it has become very sluggish. even the mouse pointer moves jerky. the router lights are blinking rapidly when the computer is running. even if no browser (firefox) is yet running. i am thinking some unwanted and possible harmful application is running without my consent. how do i find out and stop what is tying up the computer with this internet activity?

edit. i just checked task manager and cpu useage was 100% with nothing running. no email or browser. when i disabled the wireless connection cpu useage dropped to 2%. must be something going on.
