Illinois | I must be lucky to have truck drivers who can follow instructions. I've seen a lot of good responses on this thread. I have 2 cart operators who are good at sending me the texts at the time the truck is leaving the field. When one of them has to leave early I know because I will get 3-4 texts at a time with what has happened in the last hour or two. We don't run carts with augers up in field, so when semi is full they hit switch to lower the auger and pickup the phone and send me the text. Because I don't let them put up and let down augers on the run.
My workers text me their hours for that day at the end of the day. I enter their hours the next morning in the work log for the farm. So if they start working for me they learn the texting thing the first day on the job. I have had a retire landlord/farmer (64 yrs old) drive truck for me who said he couldn't text. I got his phone setup for text with carrier and we had sometime at break table showing him how to do it. After a couple of weeks he had it down pat.
I like the notebook idea a lot!!! Trying to figure where to go with it. Like someone else said I'm not in combine 100% of the time. When there is dryer or leg problems I seem to have to be back at bin site to take charge.
I don't have a problem with the recording of data. It is just part of my job 1st thing in morning to go to computer and do the entries for the day or previous day. Most of us are at computer any way, checking markets, weather, & emails.
