Iowa | Serial number will tell you a lot. Serial number 1001-1500 is a 78',1501-2000 is a 79',2001-3500 is a 80',3501-5100 is a 81',5101-6200 is a 82',6201-7300 is a 83',7301-8800 is a 84',8801-10300 is a 85'. The 84' and up machines had a lot of updates to them from the factory (ie;bigger shafts, bigger bearings etc.). It was mentioned about cab interior color, anything that has black interior is a 80' or prior. The tan interior cab came out in 1981. Prior to 82' machine the Allis Chalmers engine used Roosa-Master fuel injection pumps. The 82' and up machines went to a American Bosch injection pump. Less fuel used, less smoke, and 220 hp @ 2400 rpm rated. If you can get a clean 84' machine or newer you will be better off in the long run, just a much more reliable machine than the earlier machines. I have several customers still running the 80' and 81' machines that have been updated to the newer shafts and bearings. Some have been converted to the Cummins engine. Just all depends on what you are looking for and how well a machine has been taken care of.
