| By law an employer doesnot have to pay a waiter / waitress minimum wage as long as they (the employees) recieves 100% of the tip. Also, by law, the employer only has to give the waiter / waitress 50% of the tip if they pay them minimum wage. In most resturarants a good waiter / waitress can make a lot more money in a night thru tips than they would if paid minimum wage.
My older brother was a waiter in a high end steakhouse in Denver back in the '70s. It wasn't uncommon for him to pull in $150- $200 in tips in one night. At the time min wage was just a little over $3/hr | |
