southern MN | Myself & my wife are not into the whole tipping craze, for reasons mentioned. It just doesn't sit well with me - charge a fair price, do a good job, and we all go about our happy way. I don't like the tip mentality.
Having said that, I know waitpersons don't get paid min wage, they are expected to get a tip, and I think in my state anyhow they need to include 8% on their income taxes (because no one ever claimed any tip income, so the state forced at least an 8% of reciepts deal? If I understand right?)
All of which makes this more of a sad game to me.....
Just pay the help, charge what it takes, and lets all do a good job at what we do.
But, we tip because we do understand that's how the game works.
I just don't like the game.
Most restraunts have a clause of a tip added to the bill, often 15% 'here', if you have a larger group. It's in small print on the bill next to the taxes, so you don't see it & pay that plus leave a tip..... I don't understand that policy at all, or where it comes from, or what the deal with the group tip fee is all about. But it is common.
