Northern NE Panhandle
The problem is is that the pork industry went corporate and while it might be more efficient quality control has probably declined. Don't get me wrong I loathe the PETA exposes and their biased coverage. I'm 27 and live in NW NE up until proably 16 years ago everyone in the neighborhood had hogs including us. They were not big numbers mostly 10 to 20 sows, we are in big cattle country and also a pretty large dryland and irrigated farming area. Now i can name one guy who has 12 sows, he claims they still make him enough to keep them around. The thing i'm getting at is that this guy and the other small hog farmers took pride in their hog operations and it was a nice little cash flow in between selling cattle and wheat and corn. Now running 10k hogs you are hiring any flunky to work the job and he'd rather be anywhere but there and you wonder why these videos surface now and then. I can kinda understand how the economics drove us to 10,000 head ISO wean facilities but you hogs guys made your own bed with this overnight vertical integration and now the packers have you by the balls.
