Southern Saskatchewan | Wanted to start farming when I was young and Dad saw that would have been a mistake so he said get out in the world. After coming back to my hometown 20 years ago and slowly working more and more on the farm afterhours-my cattle #'s increased,I bought land and now farm as much as Dad (we crop 2000 ac each plus pasture for grazing 200 pairs).I was fortunate that he helped me out with 1 quarter in the early years selling me the quarter and paying yearly with no interest. Now his only help is with some of the machinery. He is retired and we bought that home section. I wouldn't be in the situation I am now if it wasn't for my parents. Not saying it can't be done in this day and age but tell me how many people run a farm/ranch without someone along the way helping them? My Dad told me back in the 80's you can buy a piece of land but don't expect it to pay for itself and he was right. The one thing we did different was we own all our land with the exception of a section we rent from family due to a death. Would I like to get bigger-no.We have all we can handle and then some.I am not about the Jones.I take care of what I have and don't worry about the neighbor that needs to be the biggest! Hope things work for you because I wouldn't give up this crazy lifestyle! | |
