We have plenty of wind break built here in SW NoDak. We use rail road ties every 8 ft. Then 4, yes 4, 2x8s starting a foot above ground with aprox 7 in spacing. Then to these nailers we put 8 ft 1x10 spaced 1.5 in apart. Believe me when I say anything less will cause a rebuild in the future. without 4 2x8s cattle will have the 1 by vertical boards off and into kindling. And I've seen lesser wood windbreaks blown down by the wind.
