Driver's actions after hitting cows prove fatal

A highway collision between a pickup and two cows during the weekend led to the death of the driver after he got out to speak to ranch hands who came to euthanize the animals.

William Earnest Kirkham, 68, of Pampa, died about 8:40 p.m. Saturday on state Highway 152, eight miles west of Pampa, according to the Department of Public Safety. He and his wife had stopped after striking the cattle and calling 911 for help, said their grandson, Jared Winegeart of Amarillo.

When ranch hands arrived, Kirkham apologized for striking the animals and was returning to the truck when a car, believed to be a 1995 Ford Mustang, swerved to avoid the cattle, skidded and struck Kirkham, DPS said. Winegeart said his grandfather was on the side of the road when he was struck.

Aquilino Leiva-Mejia , 53, of Borger, was driving the Ford east on Highway 152 when the accident occurred.

Winegeart said his grandfather was slowed by a knee replacement and couldn't get out of the way of the car like others at the scene did.

A distraught Leiva-Mejia was uninjured but was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, DPS said. He was released before being admitted, DPS said.

No charges had been filed as of Monday.
