| Jackson, while the first Democrat, should not be compared to the current democratic party. Actually the Republican party today is far more liberal than Jackson's Democratic party. Jackson differed from the Republicans at the time mostly on the concept of who should decide on the leadership - A bunch of rich guys (led by the banks - makes you think about today) vs the average citizen. He still felt it was up to the citizens/states to take care of themselves and not the federal government. | |
