Subject: RE: Feeding new corn to hogs

Vomitoxin was a problem for us in wheat and barley this year. I was able to reduce the vomitoxin levels in barley from 5.7 ppm before cleaning to 2.3 ppm by cleaning it. Actually, I traded my high vomitoxin (10.5 ppm) but good germ barley to the seed processor for some low germ lower vomitoxin seed. To make the deal he cleaned it which made for some really nice feed barley. I normally trade seed barley for barley screenings but with the amount of disease I was afraid to do that this year. I also checked into roasting, and while it might help some, no one was sure just how much. From my internet research it seemed cattle would tolerate 5 ppm, hogs 1 ppm, and poultry somewhere in between.
