A word of advice (from experience) when going to choose a dog; carry a stick or rolled paper, something that you "could" discipline them with, if they cower or try to run away...they've been abused, & it could be very difficult to train the dog...NOT telling you to use it, just to have in your hand.
If you don't plan on training it to work with livestock, get a breed that doesn't have that instinct instilled in its bloodline. They can be very difficult to train, respond to any kind of command, or even come to anyone other than the one who spends the most time with it.
