se montana | Of course it's not mineral. That would be way too easy. That problem was dealt with years ago by feeding it. That is way too easy. It's never that simple.
I often compare my program to neighbors. I feed the same custom blended mineral that everyone in this area feeds. Guess what. No one else has ear problems (or breedup problems). I guess I shouldn't compare to everyone else but this is frustrating.
The shot I'm referring to is hamophillous somnus. I give it and booster it. That is the only one that causes ear issues.
Food for thought on mineral: My dad ran this ranch for 35 years prior to me starting in 2000. For 34 of these years, he never opened a sack of mineral. His cattle were healthy, fertile, and calves weighed up well and were never as sick as they are this decade.
I spend thousands of dollars a year on mineral for what?
Sorry guys, that comment about mineral defeciency really fires me up!
I have consulted with vets until I am blue in the face with no answers. They have an idea and recommend a shot and go on with their business. The issue I always run into is that while vets are familiar with sickness, they don't doctor calves everyday of the the week. In that aspect, I usually know as much as the vet. I am seeking help on this site from a producer that has happend to have the same situation as me and has real work experience with preventing it.
