Subject: Re: Attn...Ron NEILL

SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ
I'm just saying I don't select varieties based on seed size for yield. When 50 lb bags were the rule smaller seed sizes were cheaper to plant so it did influence net $$ per acre. Now that 140000 is the rule it doesn't make a difference.
Now if there is an environmental variable like planting early giving larger seed and more yield then I'm for it.
I am a cheerleader for early planted beans and narrow rows.
But variety selection is still my no# 1 priority.
The 2 varieties that did best in the plots last year and whole field yields and did the best in the Elite trials our comapny does are the best this year again. There is some new stuff out like LL beans but haven't seen all the data and we did not have any plots where LL RR1 and RR2 were side by side.
Consistency is the name of the game.
One can predict with some accuracy which beans will be near the top the next year, corn is much harder and the level of accuracy is smaller
FYI
Variety selection is No#1 with me.
I plant early
I use narrow rows,
I treat my seed,
I control weeds and insects
I use manure so my soil test levels are high
I harvest at optimum moisture
I use tile (my home farm is pattern tiled every 80 ft)
yes I try new things( I plant several tests plots every year) spend hours on hours planting observing, harvesting ect...
Did I forget anything???
