North Central Ohio, across the Corn belt ! | Jay in WA - 11/1/2009 22:53
Any difference betwen liquid and dry nitrogen? I have a lot of residue to break down. Corn was planted at 40k and was touching the pipe on the pivots in places.
I believe you Jay and with these new hybrids and the stalks you have to deal with this is a very Big issue ! Regardless of what you grow next season. I have sprayed 28% , 10 to 20 gallon per acres, depending on the Price ? across the stalks right after harvest ! and Or ? add some sticker ???
For Dry, and this is what seems to work for us ! We have not had Liquid equipment nor storage for 15 to 20 years Now.
We use AMS every time we apply ANY Dry fertilizer product ! for several reasons and because Sulfur, as you know moves in the soil like N does but I feel it Complements N , K, Calcium also as a Plant food. soil Microbe Feeder !
for Fall Broadcast maintaining 200 Bu Plus continuous corn in North central Ohio, Dry Land, we would apply 100 Lbs Urea and 100 Lbs AMS along with any needed P, K, and Minors ! then apply the rest of the N ahead of second or third season corn on corn
DRY LAND
But our dry land farming and soil types limit us to 34 to 36 thou. standing population AT The Most.
200 to 235 Dry Bu sold per acre is good for us at this time. 5 years ago we were in the 160 to 200 bu. year in year out range.
1st. year following wheat 140 total units Nitrogen in the spring
We do put a composting Fertilizer program down in the fall after wheat going to corn. Litter, Manure also can work along with the proper Lime ? If needed
2nd year corn, fall applied as stated above-app. 70 units, then 160 Units the second spring
We tweak this each fall and each spring for various reasons !!! Always changing to update and Improve on the Bottom Line !!!
So far, after 40 seasons, I have NEVER seen a consistent return, year after year with the use of
Fungicides
Inoculates
Insecticides , Use when needed for a Specific situation !
Planter applications, Unless a Major part of your Nitrogen program is through the planter ! But P and or K in the row ? a waste
Side dress Nitrogen , for several reasons !!!
Just from my observations, field trials and Observations
We work hard to keep it simple and profitable
