| Google has a long history of very prolonged "beta" or "testing" periods. Consider that GMail was released as an invitation-only beta in 2004 and didn't completely open up for public registrations until 2007. While its hard to determine what their approach on this will be, I wouldn't bet on it being open for public registrations until sometime next year.
As for how they can afford it, Google's revenue strategy has always been a little difficult to figure out, but consider that when they started GMail, most people could not even imagine how they could afford to offer 1 gb of storage for free, now its commonplace, however they're making so much money on other projects that they can afford a wait and see attitude on projects to see if they pan out. | |
