If you think an air to air system is too expensive for the return, then forget about an earth tube. The info is all over if you want to look for it. builditsolar is a great place to find links, but there's more posted already than I've seen before as far as actual research, not some guy tried this and it didn't work so hot and this is how he'd try it next time.

The basic fact is that air is more expensive to move than water for heat capacity, many times more expensive. For the short period of time you'd need heat, it's not a great return on the investment. An air to air heat exchanger could be cobbled together easier than an earth tube, with better results. You could put a well/ground water preheater in front of the cold outside air intake for frigid temps. High capacity/low initial cost/modest running cost.
