JD grain farmer - 12/22/2020 07:01 Posi-close Schlegel wheels are what I use in soils like yours. I had issues with the regular wheels packing the furrow and leaving a crust so I switched to these five years ago and I now have the best stands that I’ve ever had. I’m sure there’s other wheels out there that are just as good but this is the one that I picked the only downfall to them would be if you had alot of rocky areas you could pick up a rock in between but I never have had that problem and we do have a few rocks in areas.

Schlagels also have a tendency to get plugged up by root balls/corn stalks/corn cobs in tilled ground if the ground is loose.

Love the job they do but in the wrong conditions they can about drive you nutty.

Had Exapta's Thompson Closing wheels before and they worked awesome in no-till but suffered the same plugging problems in loose corn stalk ground.
