Ride the cable cars, tour the cable house if you can. The wharf is interesting. Walk across the Golden Gate bridge. I may be strange, but Alcatraz did nothing at all for me-I'd just as soon look at an abandoned factory.
I was there with my wife in about 2010, I was pleasantly surprised by how "normal" it was. Across the Bay, Oakland was a true ****hole.
