I don't want to spend more than $300 because I'm just not going to use this particular rifle much.  The clarity of my Nikon and Vortex are good enough for what I do and the range that we shoot.  If I were to spend $1000 for a scope it would be on a much better rifle.
Everybody tries to tell me that I don't need a certain magnification and I appreciate their input but I have scopes with more than that, I've found that higher magnification scopes dialed down to 12 or so work better for me.  
I am shooting at 1/2" dots at 100 yards and lower power doesn't seem to work.

The Bushnell rimfire scope is surprisingly good and I'd recommend it to anybody that has a rimfire rifle and wants a nice scope at a reasonable price.  It makes me curious if their centerfire scopes are as good.

On a side note the TC Compass ended up costing me $235 and is a 5.56.
