China-owned Smithfield Foods could be be getting federal money due to the trade war with China. "The Washington Post" is reporting the company is eligible for payments as part of the $12 billion aid package for farmers. Smithfield Foods, which is based in Virginia, declined to say whether it has applied. The company did point out it is still a U-S based company, employing thousands of people in the U.S. J.B.S. of Brazil may also be eligible for aid. We told you over the summer about the Department of Agriculture's trade mitigation plan. It also announced it would be buying up $1.2 billion worth of surplus food. That food would then be distributed to food banks across the country. | |
