North Central Illinois | Thanks for posting. It was an interesting read if somewhat skewed. Judging from some of the snide comments in this thread it is clear than many farmers still don't understand why the stores that used to be almost exclusively farm stores are now mostly catering to the horse lovers, hobby farmers, and urban folks who want to buy jeans or super cool Carhartt clothing. It is because they out number us! There isn't a business model out there that could make an ag only store work in this day and age. Even Rural King and Farm + Fleet type stores carry a lot of things that are not ag related. This seems to really gripe a lot of farmers but it is what it is. They have to sell that other stuff to be able to keep the doors open and offer anything ag related at all. Look how many farmers there was 40 years ago versus now. It isn't hard to understand why an ag only story can't make it. TSC, Rural Queen, and Farm and Fleet are doing the best they can. Those are the only three that I am really familiar with although I know there are others out there in different parts of the country. | |
